Single and Happy

"Being single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you're pretty sexy and you're taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with." Sex and the City

Since when did we feel the need to put the word happy after single? Do so many people out there think that being single is a negative thing? I will admit, I have my days were I am all pity me, why am I still single? Don't we all have those days? Aren't we entitled to those days? As a 20-something gal...venturing towards the downside of my twenties...I am not at all where I thought I would be. I thought I would meet the man I was suppose to marry in college and after we graduate we would get married and surely by now I would have my first child. Ya...umm...that didn't happen. Not so much. I am NO WHERE close to that actually. God has a funny sense of humor, doesn't he? Just when you think you have your whole life planned out, he just sits back and changes the direction...that little joker : )

As this lovely day of LOVE approaches I am yet again single...but not alone. I refuse to use the words single and alone. Because I am not alone. I have a wonderful family and some pretty kick ass amazing friends. Best friends to be exact. So, I may be single but I am definitely not alone : ) Oh, I also have these two little dogs in my life, who every morning at 5:00am reassure me that I am most definitely not alone!!

I thought it would be fitting to do a blog on the greatness of being single. Every woman is single at some point in their life and instead of wallowing in it....well, you can wallow sometimes...everyone needs a good wallow, I thought why not embrace it for once. No more "Black Valentines Day" or "Single Awareness Day"...I am going to celebrate the joys of being single. There are just certain things a singleton can do that a coupled up person can not.

1. Get to know yourself. I know...sounds dumb right? Miss Football and I have these Single Gal talks all the time...we are the lone singletons in our group. You would think as a single gal, with no responsibilities--as far as children, boyfriends, husband, etc. go...you would know yourself pretty well. Well, not really. I am still trying to figure out who I am and what it is I am meant to do. So cliche, I know. I just think so many times, when a girl gets into a relationship, she molds herself to what that person wants her to be...or what she thinks he wants her to be. You should be so sure of who you are as a person that no matter who you are with...they won't define you. You define you and only you. So, being a single gal lets you figure that out. Spend time alone, go shopping alone, watch a movie alone, take a bubble bath, drink some wine and listen to music...that's what I do. As Pauly D from Jersey Shore says..."Do you!"

2. Embrace the singleness. At some point, we are going to meet our future husbands. We won't be single for ever...I hope not anyway : ) So, do what you want. Its ok to be selfish, when will you ever get to be selfish in your entire life again? Once you get married you are no longer thinking for yourself...and if you are, you might have some problems. Especially when you have children...you can forget putting yourself first. I have learned from the best. The most un-selfish person I know is my momma, I am 26 years old, baby brother is almost 18 and for 26 years my mom has not once thought of herself first. Never. She has always put her family first. My mom never really got the chance to be single and free, my mom was a young mother...so when she was my age she was caring for a child...she didn't have the option to jump on a plane for a girls weekend in Vegas like I do. Or take a road trip last minute, jump on a plane to see some of your best friends just because, buy numerous amounts of clothes, make-up, whatever it is YOU want. Now...when you are single, is the time to do so. I am not saying max out your credit cards on these, because lets be responsible here. But embrace the fact that as a single gal...you have the ability to do so.

4. Drink wine for breakfast, eat cereal for dinner. You don't have to do those exactly...but you can. Why not? When your single, you don't have to cook for someone else, you don't have to worry about what they like to eat or drink. If you want to eat Fruity Pebbles for dinner every night...so be it. I don't really recommend the wine for breakfast thing...maybe a mimosa...get at least some nutrients : )

5. Last but not least...just go have fun. Go out with your girlfriends. Join a recreational sport team, like volleyball( I haven't, but I am thinking about it when the weather is warmer). Jump on a plane at moments notice to see your besties, eat cheesecake, drink a bottle of wine, go on a shopping spree, sky dive...most of all do what makes you happy...because until you are happy with yourself, how do you expect to be happy with someone else?

Oh and P.S. on a unrelated note...how do you like my fancy new blog design...courtesy of Lauren at Blue Lux Studio She is pretty much awesome and I love her...more on this later : )

Love love love this! Perfect SATC quote to go along with it, and I love that you suggested mimosas for nutrients. :) We are the lone single girls, but you know what, we're pretty freaking awesome anyway!

I'd also like to add the following... enjoy not having to share a bed which means 6 pillows just for you is acceptable, getting to have the temperature in your house just the way you want it, being able to leave your makeup or shoes or clothes wherever you want because you can, and popcorn for dinner being an awesome meal... :)
